Tortuga is a think tank of students, researchers, and young professionals in the field of economics and social sciences. I joined Tortuga as a collaborator in 2023 and am now an associate member and Head of Communications (since September 2024).
In my role, I coordinate a four-group team responsible for Tortuga’s communication strategy, including social media, the website, and a monthly newsletter (2,000+ subscribers). Since taking on the role, I’ve helped increase our social media engagement by over 40%.
At Tortuga, I contributed to several policy-oriented publications and research briefs analyzing economic dynamics in Italy and Europe. Below are two of my main contributions:
Low-income workers face serious economic challenges in Milan. According to ISTAT data used by Tortuga, the basic consumption basket in Milan is 23% more expensive than in other Italian metropolitan areas, up to 39% higher compared to small towns, making it Italy’s most costly city to live in. Moreover, despite Milan’s overall higher median wage, the lowest-earning 10%, who tend to be young, low-educated, manual laborers in small firms, earn less in Milan than their regional and national counterparts. Our proposed solution is a voluntary Milan living wage based on cost-of-living indices of €10/hr.
There is an increasing gender gap within Generation Z across issues like euthanasia, cannabis legalization, climate change, and immigration. Notably, young women consistently adopt more progressive positions than their male peers, and social media amplifies these divides.
